Right Here, Right Now

I have just one hour left of the first day of Orientation. I've introduced myself to a couple of people. But I feel awkward and slightly out of place.

"Today is the beginning of my professional life. Right here, right now."

This is what the professors and speakers and everybody has been repeating. It's become their mantra. It is true. I have to think of every single thing now in the context of the future, of my reputation. Professionalism, Reputation and Integrity. The three most important ideals to hold on to. No one will remember that day when I got cold called and didn't know the answer. Everyone else is just thanking their personal deity or spirit that they weren't in my shoes.

But everyone will remember that time you came into class drunk or when you cheated on an exam or stole someone's computer. My peers now are my colleagues as well. I'm just glad that everyone looks as uncomfortable as I feel in our "business casual" clothing.

Now back to orientation lecture on academic rules, policies and procedures.
